GPS Surveys

The duality of Jim Firth's technical and management experience is reflected in PGA's newest product - GPS surveys. As a professional engineer, Jim has a high regard for quality of work and a scientific understanding of the technical aspects of GPS surveys.

GPS surveys offer a cost effective alternative for laying or recording golf course features anywhere in North America. We place your course on the ground quickly and accurately, identifying all course features, irrigation components, drainage features and structures.

What is GPS?
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) refers to a constellation of 24 satellites that orbit the earth twice a day. These satellites broadcast high-frequency radio signals, which are gathered by GPS receivers. These receivers use high-powered computers to calculate latitude, longitude and altitude information. Penguin Golf Associates uses this data to provide superintendents and golf course owners with accurate mapping information they can use instantly.

Why use GPS?
The speed and accuracy with which GPS is completed allows you to use your resources more effectively. Compared to conventional survey techniques, GPS offers incredible savings in time and money.

GPS Surveys provided by Penguin Golf Associates

As Built
We survey during or after construction to provide a digital recording of the golf course.

Preliminary Layout Survey
We transfer your sketches to the field by providing a quick layout on site identifying all the major features of the golf course. Send us a digital or paper copy of your sketch and we will quickly place your course on the ground.

Construction Layout
We provide a detailed construction layout of all golf course features. This can include an initial layout at the start of construction or continuous layouts you control the cost and frequency. Send us a digital or paper copy of your course and we will accurately place your course on the ground.

As Built Survey
We record construction activities throughout construction or at the end of the job. We provide a digital map of the completed project above and below ground. A typical project would include regular recording of irrigation piping, drainage lines, greens, tees, fairways, cart paths, etc. Our "As Built" survey can be combined with any existing air photos or maps.

Course Mapping
This survey entails mapping a finished course or area. We provide a digital map that can be used to produce scorecards, marketing material, course signs, tee signs or used for future design projects. We survey any above ground features such as parking lots, tees, greens, roughs, fairways, bunkers, basically anything on a golf course. This format is fully compatible with GPS golf cart tracking systems.

Quantity Calculation
Based on our course mapping, we provide accurate measurements of all key features (bunkers, tees, greens, fairways, cart paths, length of golf holes, etc.). This survey is useful for fertilizer programs, construction projects, irrigations system calibration, etc.

Marketing Images
Our surveys can be exported into most common graphical digital formats (jpeg, tif, dxf) and used for developing scorecards, brochures, or anything that requires a digital drawing.
